DR. KARTIK S. PONDICHERRY

BIN ZHANG

Anton Paar

Short Biography
Dr. Kartik Pondicherry is responsible for tribology portfolio in the Rheometer division of Anton Paar in Graz, Austria. He holds a Doctrate in Tribology from the University of Leoben, Leoben, Austria and a Masters in Nanomaterials from University of Ulm, in Ulm, Germany. Dr. Pondicherry has been working on engine tribology for over a decade and over the past few years shifted his focus on to “soft” tribology, such as food and beverages, biological interfaces, haptics, etc.

Mr. Bin Zhang is currently product manager of tribology in the surface mechanical testing division of Anton Paar in Switzerland. He is in charge of strategy and development of standard, nano, and environment controllable tribometers product range. Mr. Zhang holds master degree in physics and materials science of Ecole Centrale de Lyon in France, and has got extensive experience on materials testing techniques such as nano-indentation, scratch, tribology, AFM, etc.

Frontiers of Tribology at Anton Paar

This talk will take you through the latest advances and developments in the field of tribological testing at Anton Paar. The first part of this talk is dedicated to the following areas: (a) Vacuum high temperature tribometer with in situ observation techniques, (b) Unique nano and micro range pin-on-disk tribometer and (c) Tribocorrosion kit with temperature control   The second part of this talk deals with the MCR Tribometer and its capabilities, especially in the extreme low speed regime. Emphasis is laid on the determination of breakaway forces or the limiting frictional resistance of tribological systems. This talk also showcases Extended Stribeck curves for lubricated systems. Finally, the talk concludes with examples of applications wherein these test methods have yielded extremely valuable information pertaining to the tribological characteristics of systems, including lubricants and greases, food and beverages, polymers, cartilages, etc.

In his 10 years of working experience he has contributed to research, product development, applications & testing, business expansion, marketing and sales.

Tribology Testing for Solving Global Issues

Effective tribology testing is critical to improving fuel economy and power generation. A large portion of fuel in vehicles is spent reducing friction. By simply designing more effective lubricants we drastically reduce carbon emissions. The field of tribology is not limited to lubricant study. Particle erosion plays a critical role in renewable and fossil-fuel energy. Damages subsided to solar panels, gas turbine and wind turbine blades reduces not only their effectiveness, but also their lifetime. In this Industry talk we will share few case studies and the relevant tribology testing techniques that has enabled materials research. Tribology testing will ensure product compliance within industry standards that protects our environment and improves overall safety.
